Carmarthenshire Climate Action Group
The Climate Action Group was established in November 2021. The Group was formed as part of Carmarthenshire’s Climate Action Manifesto which was co-constructed during the global citizenship programme, ‘Walk the Global Walk’ (2019-21).
Climate Action Group
Climate Action Group meetings take place every three months and are chaired on a rotational basis by two pupil representative members. This strategy has supported and impacted positively on the Local Authority’s tireless drive to enhance young people’s contributions to their communities and involvement in decision making. The meetings provide an opportunity for the Group to discuss issues relating to climate change and implement the recommendations in their Manifesto. The Group’s focus is to ensure the delivery and implementation of their Climate Action Manifesto (as agreed by the Executive Board in October 2021) which addresses the Climate and Nature Emergency and supports key aspects of the Corporate Strategy, 2022 – 27.
All schools across Carmarthenshire are invited to elect representatives to contribute to the Group. The Group facilitates discussions with elected members, council officers, local businesses and organizations on issues relating to Climate Change. Through this platform they are able to support their schools and local communities by raising awareness and initiating positive adaptations which address the Climate and Nature Emergency. As a result of this, all members are able to promote a culture of care and responsibility for our future generations at a local, regional and national level.
This pioneering pupil led discussion platform empowers and engages young people in debate and discussion on issues which concern them. All Group members are advocates for positive change across their schools and communities and are supported to seek out solutions and engage in positive actions linked to Climate Change.
The Group will launch its revised Manifesto in June 2024. The new objectives were reviewed and agreed by all members in response the current urgency for positive change linked to the Climate and Nature Emergency.
Waste Reform 24
Carmarthenshire Climate Action Group addressed Welsh Government’s Waste Reform 24 new workplace regulations with the launch of two short films for schools. The films highlighted the changes and identified how pupils can play their part in implementing the new legislation.
Pupils from Ysgol Bro Banw, Ysgol Ffwrnes, Ysgol Penrhos, Bryngwyn and Coedcae presented a short guide to the legislation in a ‘pupil friendly’ format.
These resources will support whole school communities to implement the necessary changes whilst raising awareness of managing and reducing waste.
