Farming Connect: Horticulture diversification
Trialling legume-cereal co-production as food source for people
Join us at Bremenda Isaf Farm in Llanarthne for an event organised by Farming Connect.
As a Focus Farm for Farming Connect, Bremenda Isaf is trialling legume-cereal production with a focus on food for human consumption.
- This event has passed.
The farm is working closely with the Carmarthenshire County Council school catering team through an already established two-year menu redesign around increasing seasonal, local and sustainable ingredients. The farm and catering team will explore the viability of incorporating different legumes into menus, as an additional sustainable source of nutrition to replace the reliance on imported ingredients in meals.
In addition to legume and wheat production, Bremenda Isaf is developing a number of diversification strategies which will be discussed in detail during this event. This is a great opportunity to explore new options for diversifying into horticulture and discuss public procurement as a future route to market.
As a Focus Farm for Farming Connect, Bremenda Isaf is trialling legume-cereal production with a focus on food for human consumption. This event will highlight and discuss the project aims, including:
- Identifying and demonstrating the production of legume and wheat varieties suitable for cultivation in Carmarthenshire, which, in addition are suitable for human consumption
- Exploring cultivation, harvesting and processing methods for chosen crops
- Identifying a supply chain for the crop, including public, private and community sectors
There will also be opportunities to discuss the trial with the growers and learn more about the long term plans for the county farm.
